After a while i’d like to come back with a book review following the last one The E-Myth Revisited; this time i want to suggest another milestone for anybody that want to develop his own start-up business: Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne. The authors are two professors at INSEAD Business School and considered two of the most important influencers in business strategy.
The main theory they present in the book is that, to survive the market challenges, is better for a business to discover new competitor-free blue oceans rather then fight in the shark-infested (blood) red oceans. Again a obvious concept but very rarely pointed out by anybody… the power of simplicity!
The book shows how to systematically search for blue oceans or never discovered before markets, plenty of new opportunities and new products and services to sell. It gives tools and analytics frameworks to create new blue oceans and develop a strategy for winning in such new marketplaces without competition with others.
From sketching the strategic chart of the business sector to carrying out a blue ocean strategy the authors lead the reader to think out of the box in a very effective way, bringing also many cases of study from very different sectors and times.
I suggest reading this book before you start your venture so you can directly dive into a blue ocean!

The E-Myth Revisited – Micheal E. Gerber
Pros: very clear and illuminating
Cons: “american” biased approach to business
The first step to healing is getting conscious that you are sick and, well, this book is definitely a good help to start such a recovery path. I’ve read it after the suggestion of a good friend of mine following my request for an inspiration on how to become an entrepreneur. Or better an effective entrepreneur having suffered many failures since then.
Michael Gerber, the author, has no need of an introduction but beside this, is really very inspiring; through the book ,that has the structure of a dialog with a client he is helping in restructuring her business, he analyzes all the critical faces of the matter both at personal and at business perspective. The outcome is something similar to an “internal travel” to discover all the weak spots that every human being has, related to the business grow path.
What made this book very fascinating to me is that every assertion of Michael seem very obvious.. but only after you read it! I mean he leads you to become conscious of what is under your nose, maybe a situation or a solution to a problem that, once that is pointed out.. it’s so obvious to you.. how could i have missed it!
Real milestones are the walkings through the entrepreneur’s personalities and the life phases of a business and , on top of that, the working-on-your rather than working-in-your business approach philosophy. Balancing the manager, the technician and the entrepreneur that is inside each of us will be the key to a revolution that will lead to re-born as an “illuminated entrepreneur”.
